SUMMARY:Cos4Cloud final event: its legacy for the citizen science community
DESCRIPTION:As the Cos4Cloud project is coming to an end\, Cos4Cloud and ECSA are co-organising a final event for everyone interested to learn about the project’s main achievements\, discover how to use Cos4Cloud’s products and celebrate the community that has actively contributed to the project. \nWhat is Cos4Cloud?\n \nCos4Cloud is a H2020 project to boost citizen science technologies. The project has developed 13 tools and services that address the technological challenges shared by citizen observatories. The services can help COs to increase the quantity and the quality of observations\, and improve interoperability among others. SUMMARY:The Citizen Science Hub of UAB presented in Sabadell
DESCRIPTION:The City Council of Sabadell organized a 2-day conference on Citizen Science\, called ‘Jornades de Ciència Ciutadana‘ that took place on 18 and 19 of October\, 2022. \nThis Conference is presented as a forum to make visible and promote the transversal and effective use of citizen science\, considering it an essential tool to respond to the current challenges of our society. A video for the inauguration of the event and additional information can be found here.\n \nOn behalf of INCENTIVE\, UAB participated in the roundtable on Implication of the population in health-related research\, presenting the pilot case of the Citizen Science Hub at UAB.  The presentations of this roundtable can be found here. \nIn total\, during the two days that the conference lasted\, there were 17 roundtables\, 10 lectures and 4 participatory workshops. The agenda\, presentations and visual summary of the event can be found in the event’s website.  \nUAB also participated in the conference as a speaker\, talking about FAIR data. DESCRIPTION:What is it about?\nThe synergising CitieS-Health project is inviting everyone to the final conference called “Shaping the Future of Citizen Science linking Environment and Health” that will take place in Rome on June 14th. This event\, titled  Shaping the Future of Citizen Science linking Environment and Health\, will be a hybrid meeting: online and in-person at the Sapienza University of Rome. This will be a free event open to the public\, but registration is required. \nAfter the welcome and presentation of the session by Annibale Biggeri\, researcher at the University of Padua\, and Xavier Basagaña\, researcher at ISGlobal and principal investigator of the CitieS-Health project\, there will be an introductory talk on the Combination of Citizen Science and Environmental Epidemiology by Fleur Froeling\, researcher at Utrecht University\, and Florence Gignac\, researcher at ISGlobal. \nSee the complete agenda here and make your inscription here. \nStructure of the event\nThe event will be divided into two main blocks. \nThe first block will cover the implementation of citizen science in the field of environment and health with a presentation on the experience of the CitieS-Health project by Xavier Basagaña. He will explain\, amongst other things what was done in each of the five city pilots in terms of co-creation\, the project toolkit\, and some lessons learned from the COVID-19 pandemic. Afterward\, Marco Martuzzi\, Director of the Environment and Health Department at the Italian National Institute for Health and formerly at WHO\, will discuss the importance of citizen participation in health research and policy. Later\, Janneke Elberse\, Research Scientist on Citizen Science and Senior Advisor on Safety\, Perception\, and Behavior at the Dutch National Institute for Public Health and the Environment (RIVM)\, will present bottom-up citizen science affecting national institutes from an environmental epidemiology perspective. \nThe second block will bring results into policy\, moderated by Rosa Arias\, CEO at Science for Change\, and Alba L’Astorina\, researcher at the National Research Council of Italy (CNR – IREA).  The epidemiological results of each CitieS-Health pilot study will be presented. DESCRIPTION:Societal impact is increasingly central to scientific research. How does new knowledge contribute to solving major issues in society? And how can we gain knowledge that is actually beneficial for society? Scientists are motivated to put their knowledge into practice\, which requires a deeper understanding of that same society. Cooperation is essential. \nCitizen science strives for a deepened cooperation between scientists and stakeholders from society\, in order to achieve that better understanding of societal challenges and the development of solutions that may be implemented in a sustainable way. \nOn Thursday 12 May 2022\, the University of Twente is organising a symposium on citizen science. The morning session is for UT staff and students only\, to exchange experiences\, lessons learned\, knowledge\, and expertise from UT citizen science initiatives. The afternoon session is open for everyone. DESCRIPTION:The Engaging Citizen Science Conference 2022 is an interdisciplinary event that promotes knowledge sharing among the citizen science community. SUMMARY:Creating spaces for reactive Citizen Science
DESCRIPTION:The Science\, Technology and Policy Studies section of the University of Twente is welcoming everyone to the online event\, with Anna Berti Suman giving a presentation followed by questions and discussion. \nFor more information please contact e.schiweck@utwente.nl \nWhat is the event about\nThe Marie Skłodowska-Curie Action-funded Sensing for Justice (SensJus) project researches the potential of grassroots-driven environmental (health) monitoring\, i.e. reactive Citizen Science\, as a source of evidence in environmental justice litigation\, and as a tool for conflict mediation in extra-judicial setting. There are currently “grey zones” of Citizen Science where its recognition and valorisation is more difficult than for established\, larger-scale\, EU-funded citizen science initiatives. These concern very local\, spontaneous\, small-scale\, and low-budget initiatives that are not supported by a public agency nor linked with an academic institution\, and that deploy in contexts dominated by high social distrust and conflict. \nWhat Ms. Suman will discuss\nThrough fieldwork\, Ms. Suman has explored specific instances of this type of citizen science\, for example in Basilicata where lay people are monitoring the impact of oil pollution on their land\, exposing themselves to legal risks and to risks for their own health. During her presentation\, she will illustrate preliminary findings stemming from SensJus and stimulate a collective reflection along the following lines: \n\nThe need to establish spaces where experts and peers can advise less structured and more spontaneous citizen science initiatives also in complying with applicable laws and boosting the judicial potential of citizen science.\nThe recognition at the legal (or at least political) level of more ‘reactive’ forms of citizen science\, as suggested by the literature.\nThe reflection on new forms of communication that bring a wider audience closer to citizen science & the law\, i.e.\, through drawings and story-telling (see relevant sources here and here).\n\nAbout the speaker\nAnna Berti Suman is a Marie Skłodowska-Curie Fellow and former Dutch Research Council  Fellow at the European Commission Joint Research Centre. SUMMARY:Third consortium meeting
DESCRIPTION:On Wednesday\, 9th of February\, 2022\, the INCENTIVE consortium met for the project’s third consortium meeting\, resuming after the Christmas break. As in the previous meetings\, due to the ongoing pandemic the meeting was held virtually once again and hosted by the University of Twente (Design Lab)\, the coordinator of the project. The meeting signaled 1 full year of implementation – the project had kicked off in February 2021 – and the start of a series of core pilot activities for the establishment and operationalisation of Citizen Science Hubs. \nHowever\, the event included also a strongly conceptual aspect. During the meeting\, two honorary guests were invited to deliver an inspirational speech. On the one hand\, prof. Barend van der Meulen from the University of Twente gave a lecture on the challenges of embedding Citizen Science in RPFOs\, as well as on realistic measures to be applied to overcome those barriers. On the other hand\, Teresa Schäfer\, from the Center for Social Innovation\, presented her experience on Monitoring and Evaluation frameworks about Citizen Science projects\, so as to guide INCENTIVE partners in effectively measuring the success of the project. \nMoreover\, partners participated in a dedicated interactive working session organised by UT. During the session\, partners reflected on the purpose and process of creating the Citizen Science Hubs in each university\, by drawing inspirational sketches in the Mural. Many members of the Advisory Board attended the session\, sharing their experiences with the younger members and commenting on the results. This helped the consortium shape a common understanding about the next period\, which foresees the actual operation of the Hubs. \nAnother highlight was the introduction of the new Project Officer of INCENTIVE\, miss. Katharina Buse. In her speech\, the PO reiterated the criticality of engaging citizens and stakeholders in research projects funded by the EU\, and the importance of achieving that goal through Citizen Science. She also affirmed the commitment of the Research Executive Agency in helping the INCENTIVE team disseminate the project’s results\, and also provided answers to questions posed by partners. \nDuring the meeting\, all WP and Task leaders presented in detail the work that they performed since July 2021\, the challenges\, and the results. Special emphasis was placed on WP2 and WP3\, which focus on the consolidation of Citizen Sciences Hubs within the universities and their practical activation through local engagement. UT and UAB\, which lead WP2 and 3 respectively\, informed the other partners about the achievements so far and what is expected to be accomplished until summer. Partners’ commitment was ensured once again\, as the Hubs’ proper function necessitates collective effort. \nOf particular importance was the section devoted to the evaluation and assessment of the project’s progress. To that end\, Q-Plan introduced an integrated framework that includes various Key Performance Indicators that will help partners measure quantitatively how successful the activities of INCENTIVE will be. SDA Bocconi\, as leader of the sustainability WP\, together with Q-Plan\, outlined the measures taken to guarantee the due exploitation of the project’s results. Afterward\, the main dissemination and networking efforts and results (WR and ECSA)\, were presented to the consortium partners. Will there be a third generation of smart specialisation strategies? It is certain that today there are European territories that are very advanced\, where are they? What lessons can we learn from them? \nThere are broad societal challenges that can be solved with responsible research and innovation. In addition to the needs of economic recovery and the double transition (sustainable and digital)\, there are some layers of the European population that are actively resisting globalisation and the benefits of scientific development. More inclusive policies need to be developed. How will be these future policies? \nOn the other hand\, despite decades of benefiting European regional development policies\, there are still policies that do not support multi-level governance. Some European territories still face with over-centralised policies at national or regional level. It is desirable to establish effective mechanisms that mobilise society as a whole beyond the traditional economic actors to gather all resources possible. DESCRIPTION:The TeRRItoria project organizes a series of online webinars with the aim to provide some theoretical means as well as practical experiences that are useful to design institutional changes in territories to implement effective RRI principles into R&I ecosystems. More specifically:  \n\nHow to engage citizens in Regional Development policies:  Tuesday 18th of January 2022\, from 14:00 to 16:00 CET\nInstitutional changes for Responsible Research and Innovation: Thursday 20th of January 2022\, from 14:00 to 16:00 CET\nThe way forward\, Tuesday 25th of January 2022\, from 14:00 to 16:00 CET\n\nInstitutional Changes for Responsible Research and Innovation \n\nThursday 20th of January 2022\, from 14:00 to 16:00\n\nAfter a decade Responsible Research and innovation is an operative concept that it is present in big programmes such Horizon Europe but as well implemented in small scale. How it is possible to develop RRI in the local or regional level? Are there particular constraints associated to the smaller scale? There are good examples of initiatives to reinforce social systems with institutionalised collective co-responsibility as a driving force for socially desirable innovation. The Science with and for Society (SwafS) programme of H2020 has supported many local implementations of RRI that will provide a legacy with institutional changes. There are European territories that have effectively design organisational innovation and institutional changes in governance that will last and that are particularly useful to generate impact. Its goal is to support the European Commission’s objective of spreading and embedding Responsible Research and Innovation (RRI) in the European Research Area. \nFor almost three years\, GRACE project partners have worked towards implementing fundamental institutional change in 6 research performing and funding organisations. With an intense mutual learning programme and a co-creation environment\, six expert partners have supported six other partners in developing a set of specific RRI-orientated Grounding Actions in their organisation. The conference will be a gathering of the global citizen science community full of exciting talks\, sharing of experiences\, stimulating debates\, and informal networking moments. SUMMARY:HEIDI 2nd roundtable on Digital Actions
DESCRIPTION:About this event\n\n\nThe HEIDI project\, coordinated by UCL Extreme Citizen Science\, is hosting a series of roundtables to learn more about “Digital Action”: citizen science\, makeathons and hackathons during the Covid-19 crisis. \nIf you work in a higher educational institution\, you are invited to the two roundtable discussions to share your experience\, opinions\, and ideas about it. Indicative topics to be discussed\, among others\, are: \n\nHow has the Covid-19 crisis affected your work in a Higher Education Institution?\nAre you familiar with Digital Action (DA)\, whether as a participant or observer of a DA initiative?\nWhich aspects of your experience of digital participation during the Covid-19 pandemic have been positive\, and which are negative?\nWhich barriers and drivers to HE institutions engaging with DA can you identify\, and are these institution-led or imposed upon the institution?\nHow can HE institutions raise awareness about DA initiatives and their potential impact on bottom-up action?\n\nNote: the meeting will be recorded for evaluation and research purposes. \nAbout the roundtables\nHEIDI project is holding two roundtables with both HEI staff and students to map the barriers and opportunities of digital action within HEIs which exist at different levels. Although UCL actively promotes and supports activities that encourage two-way communication between the academic community and members of the public\, the project has still a lot to learn from sharing its experiences and discussing concerns about how the project envisions the future while trying to identify ways that can improve the ways it works with communities. The project explores the ways in which these take place at the community level and in HEIs in five European countries (UK\, France\, Malta\, Greece\, and Cyprus). The aim of the project is to upskill HE staff and students towards more resilience\, adaptation to change\, and agility that could enable HEIs to work together with citizens to shape better societies. To do so\, the project offers an opportunity for HEIs students and staff to identify and understand drivers and barriers to HEIs adoption of societal values in a crisis situation\, while seeking to identify the needs of various community groups\, including vulnerable ones. \nMore about the project here.
