SUMMARY:Engaging Citizen Science Conference 2022
DESCRIPTION:The Engaging Citizen Science Conference 2022 is an interdisciplinary event that promotes knowledge sharing among the citizen science community. Citizen science researchers\, practitioners\, and citizens are invited to share their research\, ideas\, and innovation in through workshops\, dialogue roundtables\, posters\, and demos from diverse research areas\, including natural and technical sciences\, life and health sciences\, and social sciences and humanities. \nCitizen science as an interdisciplinary field holds promises for boosting scientific research\, increasing public participation in scientific research\, and empowering citizens in their everyday life. Citizen science covers many different initiatives and activities from crowdsourcing activities where citizens collect and analyze large amounts of data to deliberative processes where citizens are active in science-related policy-making. With roots in amateur science and participatory democracy\, citizen science currently develops rapidly to include many different innovative approaches\, including digital approaches\, to promote and sustain participation and empowerment. This conference invites all citizen science stakeholders to come together to showcase how engaging citizen science can be. \nThe deadline for registering is on the 8th April 2022. \nMore information here. \n

SUMMARY:Creating spaces for reactive Citizen Science
DESCRIPTION:The Science\, Technology and Policy Studies section of the University of Twente is welcoming everyone to the online event\, with Anna Berti Suman giving a presentation followed by questions and discussion. \nFor more information please contact e.schiweck@utwente.nl \nWhat is the event about\nThe Marie Skłodowska-Curie Action-funded Sensing for Justice (SensJus) project researches the potential of grassroots-driven environmental (health) monitoring\, i.e. reactive Citizen Science\, as a source of evidence in environmental justice litigation\, and as a tool for conflict mediation in extra-judicial setting. There are currently “grey zones” of Citizen Science where its recognition and valorisation is more difficult than for established\, larger-scale\, EU-funded citizen science initiatives. These concern very local\, spontaneous\, small-scale\, and low-budget initiatives that are not supported by a public agency nor linked with an academic institution\, and that deploy in contexts dominated by high social distrust and conflict. \nWhat Ms. Suman will discuss\nThrough fieldwork\, Ms. Suman has explored specific instances of this type of citizen science\, for example in Basilicata where lay people are monitoring the impact of oil pollution on their land\, exposing themselves to legal risks and to risks for their own health. During her presentation\, she will illustrate preliminary findings stemming from SensJus and stimulate a collective reflection along the following lines: \n\nThe need to establish spaces where experts and peers can advise less structured and more spontaneous citizen science initiatives also in complying with applicable laws and boosting the judicial potential of citizen science.\nThe recognition at the legal (or at least political) level of more ‘reactive’ forms of citizen science\, as suggested by the literature.\nThe reflection on new forms of communication that bring a wider audience closer to citizen science & the law\, i.e.\, through drawings and story-telling (see relevant sources here and here).\n\nAbout the speaker\nAnna Berti Suman is a Marie Skłodowska-Curie Fellow and former Dutch Research Council  Fellow at the European Commission Joint Research Centre. Through the project “SensJus”\, Anna is performing research on the potential of civic monitoring as a source of evidence for environmental litigation and as a tool to foster environmental mediation. \nAfter completing the legal practice and passing the qualifying examination\, Anna is Qualified Barrister in environmental and climate law under the Bar Association of Rome\, following cases at the Law Firm Dini-Saltalamacchia and at Systasis – Study Centre for the Management of Environmental Conflicts\, Milan. \nAnna’s page on the JRC Science Hub can be visited at: https://joint-research-centre.ec.europa.eu/anna-berti-suman_en

SUMMARY:Third consortium meeting
DESCRIPTION:On Wednesday\, 9th of February\, 2022\, the INCENTIVE consortium met for the project’s third consortium meeting\, resuming after the Christmas break. As in the previous meetings\, due to the ongoing pandemic the meeting was held virtually once again and hosted by the University of Twente (Design Lab)\, the coordinator of the project. The meeting signaled 1 full year of implementation – the project had kicked off in February 2021 – and the start of a series of core pilot activities for the establishment and operationalisation of Citizen Science Hubs. \nHowever\, the event included also a strongly conceptual aspect. During the meeting\, two honorary guests were invited to deliver an inspirational speech. On the one hand\, prof. Barend van der Meulen from the University of Twente gave a lecture on the challenges of embedding Citizen Science in RPFOs\, as well as on realistic measures to be applied to overcome those barriers. On the other hand\, Teresa Schäfer\, from the Center for Social Innovation\, presented her experience on Monitoring and Evaluation frameworks about Citizen Science projects\, so as to guide INCENTIVE partners in effectively measuring the success of the project. \nMoreover\, partners participated in a dedicated interactive working session organised by UT. During the session\, partners reflected on the purpose and process of creating the Citizen Science Hubs in each university\, by drawing inspirational sketches in the Mural. Many members of the Advisory Board attended the session\, sharing their experiences with the younger members and commenting on the results. This helped the consortium shape a common understanding about the next period\, which foresees the actual operation of the Hubs. \nAnother highlight was the introduction of the new Project Officer of INCENTIVE\, miss. Katharina Buse. In her speech\, the PO reiterated the criticality of engaging citizens and stakeholders in research projects funded by the EU\, and the importance of achieving that goal through Citizen Science. She also affirmed the commitment of the Research Executive Agency in helping the INCENTIVE team disseminate the project’s results\, and also provided answers to questions posed by partners. \nDuring the meeting\, all WP and Task leaders presented in detail the work that they performed since July 2021\, the challenges\, and the results. Special emphasis was placed on WP2 and WP3\, which focus on the consolidation of Citizen Sciences Hubs within the universities and their practical activation through local engagement. UT and UAB\, which lead WP2 and 3 respectively\, informed the other partners about the achievements so far and what is expected to be accomplished until summer. Partners’ commitment was ensured once again\, as the Hubs’ proper function necessitates collective effort. \nOf particular importance was the section devoted to the evaluation and assessment of the project’s progress. To that end\, Q-Plan introduced an integrated framework that includes various Key Performance Indicators that will help partners measure quantitatively how successful the activities of INCENTIVE will be. SDA Bocconi\, as leader of the sustainability WP\, together with Q-Plan\, outlined the measures taken to guarantee the due exploitation of the project’s results. Afterward\, the main dissemination and networking efforts and results (WR and ECSA)\, were presented to the consortium partners. Attention was paid to the local engagement and synergising actions that the pilot RPFOs perform\, and the need to capture and build on these activities. \nThe meeting ended with the partners planning the next consortium meeting\, which is expected to be held physically in Thessaloniki. \nStay tuned\, because an exciting third semester is coming\, with plenty of pilot activities! \nMake sure to subscribe to our newsletter and follow us on our SMAs to receive the latest updates from our project’s next steps!

SUMMARY:TerRRItoria 3rd webinar: The way forward
DESCRIPTION:The TeRRItoria project organizes a series of online webinars with the aim to provide some theoretical means as well as practical experiences that are useful to design institutional changes in territories to implement effective RRI principles into R&I ecosystems. More specifically: \n\nHow to engage citizens in Regional Development policies:  Tuesday 18th of January 2022\, from 14:00 to 16:00 CET\nInstitutional changes for Responsible Research and Innovation: Thursday 20th of January 2022\, from 14:00 to 16:00 CET\nThe way forward\, Tuesday 25th of January 2022\, from 14:00 to 16:00 CET\n\nThe way forward \n\nThursday 20th of January 2022\, from 14:00 to 16:00\n\nHow will regional strategies look like after 2027? Will there be a third generation of smart specialisation strategies? It is certain that today there are European territories that are very advanced\, where are they? What lessons can we learn from them? \nThere are broad societal challenges that can be solved with responsible research and innovation. In addition to the needs of economic recovery and the double transition (sustainable and digital)\, there are some layers of the European population that are actively resisting globalisation and the benefits of scientific development. More inclusive policies need to be developed. How will be these future policies? \nOn the other hand\, despite decades of benefiting European regional development policies\, there are still policies that do not support multi-level governance. Some European territories still face with over-centralised policies at national or regional level. It is desirable to establish effective mechanisms that mobilise society as a whole beyond the traditional economic actors to gather all resources possible. How we could design more effective multi-level governance policies? \nFind more about the webinar here.\nAbout TeRRItoria project\n\n\n\nTeRRItoria is a Horizon 2020 project which aims to position regions and local authorities as places for science governance\, education\, public engagement\, ethics\, and open access. TeRRItoria operates in a context of transition in European society\, which is often critical. For territorial governance\, this shift and transition can be a challenge to the usual strategies and measures fostering economic development and social cohesion. \n\n\n\nFind more about the project here.

SUMMARY:TerRRItoria 2nd webinar: Institutional changes for Responsible Research and Innovation
DESCRIPTION:The TeRRItoria project organizes a series of online webinars with the aim to provide some theoretical means as well as practical experiences that are useful to design institutional changes in territories to implement effective RRI principles into R&I ecosystems. More specifically: \n\nHow to engage citizens in Regional Development policies:  Tuesday 18th of January 2022\, from 14:00 to 16:00 CET\nInstitutional changes for Responsible Research and Innovation: Thursday 20th of January 2022\, from 14:00 to 16:00 CET\nThe way forward\, Tuesday 25th of January 2022\, from 14:00 to 16:00 CET\n\nInstitutional Changes for Responsible Research and Innovation \n\nThursday 20th of January 2022\, from 14:00 to 16:00\n\nAfter a decade Responsible Research and innovation is an operative concept that it is present in big programmes such Horizon Europe but as well implemented in small scale. How it is possible to develop RRI in the local or regional level? Are there particular constraints associated to the smaller scale? There are good examples of initiatives to reinforce social systems with institutionalised collective co-responsibility as a driving force for socially desirable innovation. The Science with and for Society (SwafS) programme of H2020 has supported many local implementations of RRI that will provide a legacy with institutional changes. There are European territories that have effectively design organisational innovation and institutional changes in governance that will last and that are particularly useful to generate impact. This session will discuss those results in RRI implementation that can be immediately applied at the territorial level.

SUMMARY:TerRRItoria 1st Webinar: How to engage citizens in Regional Development policies
DESCRIPTION:The TeRRItoria project organizes a series of online webinars with the aim to provide some theoretical means as well as practical experiences that are useful to design institutional changes in territories to implement effective RRI principles into R&I ecosystems. More specifically: \n\nHow to engage citizens in Regional Development policies:  Tuesday 18th of January 2022\, from 14:00 to 16:00 CET\nInstitutional changes for Responsible Research and Innovation: Thursday 20th of January 2022\, from 14:00 to 16:00 CET\nThe way forward\, Tuesday 25th of January 2022\, from 14:00 to 16:00 CET\n\nHow to engage citizens in regional development policies\nTuesday 18th of January 2022\, 14:00 to 16h00\nThere is a need to better connect democratic institutions with European citizens; is responsible research and innovation a useful approach? Could RRI improve the citizens’ engagement in regional development strategies? In some European territories\, RRI has proven to be an effective mechanism to co-create research and innovation outcomes\, and provide input to policy agendas. Nowadays it ensures that policy makers develop inclusive strategies\, and are able to mobilise all the regional stakeholders to address societal challenges (e.g. sustainable smart specialisation strategies S4). The first session is dedicated to discuss with practical examples and relevant academics how RRI supports the participation of civil society in regional development strategies bringing mission-oriented policies towards societal challenges. \nFind more about the webinar here.\nAbout TeRRItoria project\n\n\n\nTeRRItoria is a Horizon 2020 project which aims to position regions and local authorities as places for science governance\, education\, public engagement\, ethics\, and open access. SUMMARY:HEIDI 2nd roundtable on Digital Actions
DESCRIPTION:About this event\n\n\nThe HEIDI project\, coordinated by UCL Extreme Citizen Science\, is hosting a series of roundtables to learn more about “Digital Action”: citizen science\, makeathons and hackathons during the Covid-19 crisis. \nIf you work in a higher educational institution\, you are invited to the two roundtable discussions to share your experience\, opinions\, and ideas about it. Indicative topics to be discussed\, among others\, are: \n\nHow has the Covid-19 crisis affected your work in a Higher Education Institution?\nAre you familiar with Digital Action (DA)\, whether as a participant or observer of a DA initiative?\nWhich aspects of your experience of digital participation during the Covid-19 pandemic have been positive\, and which are negative?\nWhich barriers and drivers to HE institutions engaging with DA can you identify\, and are these institution-led or imposed upon the institution?\nHow can HE institutions raise awareness about DA initiatives and their potential impact on bottom-up action?\n\nNote: the meeting will be recorded for evaluation and research purposes. \nAbout the roundtables\nHEIDI project is holding two roundtables with both HEI staff and students to map the barriers and opportunities of digital action within HEIs which exist at different levels. Although UCL actively promotes and supports activities that encourage two-way communication between the academic community and members of the public\, the project has still a lot to learn from sharing its experiences and discussing concerns about how the project envisions the future while trying to identify ways that can improve the ways it works with communities. Similar roundtables will also be held in HEIs in France and Malta. \nFirst roundtable: 11th of November\, 13:00 – 14:30 CET.  \nRegistration here \nSecond roundtable: 16th of November\, 12:00 – 13:30 CET. \nRegistration here \nYou can read more about HEIDI in this blog post\, and you can find some more detailed examples of Digital Action here. \nAbout HEIDI project\nHEIDI – ‘Digital Actions at HEIs as a catalyst for social change in the COVID-19 crisis’\,  is a two-year Erasmus+ project which aims to upskill Higher Education (HE) staff and students towards more resilience\, adaptation to change\, and agility that could enable HEIs to work together with citizens to shape better societies. The project explores the ways in which these take place at the community level and in HEIs in five European countries (UK\, France\, Malta\, Greece\, and Cyprus). The aim of the project is to upskill HE staff and students towards more resilience\, adaptation to change\, and agility that could enable HEIs to work together with citizens to shape better societies. To do so\, the project offers an opportunity for HEIs students and staff to identify and understand drivers and barriers to HEIs adoption of societal values in a crisis situation\, while seeking to identify the needs of various community groups\, including vulnerable ones. \nMore about the project here.

SUMMARY:D-NOSES Conference on Odour Pollution & Citizen Science
DESCRIPTION:About the Conference\nThe D-NOSES project has been pioneering the use of Citizen Science as a way to engage Quadruple Helix stakeholders in co-creating balanced approaches to odour issues. As a result\, D-NOSES created tools and methods to measure odour impact transparently and in real-time. The project now invites citizens\, scientists and stakeholders to join the project results conference to find out how their work has and will continue to impact odour management from a technical\, social and policy perspective. \nThe Conference is organised within the framework of the D-NOSES project\, which has received funding from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme under Grant Agreement No. 789315. \nThree live webinars will be held between 14 and 20 October: \n\n14/10: The D-NOSES project at a glance\n18/10: The D-NOSES methodology and results to tackle odour pollution using citizen science\n20/10: Introducing odour pollution in the policy agendas\n\nFind the detailed programme for each of the three webinars here. \nRegistration here. \n\nAbout the D-Noses project\nD-NOSES – “The Distributed Network for Odour Sensing\, Empowerment and Sustainability” is an EU-funded H2020 SwafS project that empowers citizens to become a driving force for change through Responsible Research and Innovation\, Citizen Science and co-creation tools to map and measure the problem\, and co-design solutions with key Quadruple Helix stakeholders. The 3 year-a-long project is supported by key experts in RRI\, citizen science and co-creation\, International Associations\, odour and sustainability experts\, including universities and SMEs\, local administration\, and public sector bodies. D-NOSES will reverse the way in which odour pollution is commonly tackled (i.e. a non-transparent\, private process involving either the odour emitting industry or the local city council\, with no citizen involvement and poor access to data and information) by applying a holistic approach to researching\, building\, and suggesting an appropriate regulatory framework\, which can act as a basis of the future odour pollution control efforts. \nD-NOSES empowers citizens to become a driving force for change through RRI\, Citizen Science and co-creation tools to map and measure the problem\, and co-design solutions with key quadruple helix stakeholders. D-NOSES has kickstarted a much-needed collaborative journey to tackle the problem of odours at a global scale by developing coordinated local case studies in 10 European and non-European countries. \nMore about the project here.

SUMMARY:1st Global Transdisciplinarity Conference
DESCRIPTION:What is the Conference about?\nThe 1st Global Transdisciplinarity Conference started in fall 2020 with a series of virtual pre-meetings with a selected group of international scholars from diverse disciplines\, linked by a strong commitment to science-society-collaboration (SSC) and knowledge integration. \nUnder the umbrella of systems and complexity sciences these pre-conferences brought together a core group of researchers interested in social transformation\, innovation\, and the role of academia and institutions of higher education in the transition towards a fair and sustainable global human-environment coupled system under the One Health-paradigm. \nWhy is the event relevant to INCENTIVE?\nIn INCENTIVE\, higher educational institutions are the protagonist and main driver of institutional change towards grounding RRI principles through the institutionalization of Citizen Science Hubs. Four universities across Europe will\, for the first time\, co-create and sustain their own Hub\, which will bring together scientists\, citizens\, entrepreneurs\, and policymakers to achieve inclusive and more open scientific structures. As such\, the Conference can offer important insights on how academia and educational institutions can become a societal tool for achieving open science and sustainability. \nWho can attend\, and how?\nThe main conference will be held in fall 2021 in Krems an der Donau (Austria) at Danube University as well as its surroundings in the World Heritage Region of Wachau. It will be an intense\, three-day working (27-29 September) and networking experience designed to both give space for individual exchange as well as to building a common understanding of the possibilities\, challenges\, and advances in the field of Science Society Collaboration. \nHowever\, given the ongoing pandemic and the need to attract individuals that will not be able to attend in person\, the conference is set up as a hybrid event. The conference will be streamed online\, giving tele-participants an opportunity to contribute and benefit from it. \nInformation and pre-registration\nIf you want to learn more about the overall approach to transdisciplinarity and Science Society Collaboration in general download the info cache. \nMoreover\, pre-registration to the Conference is currently open. You can pre-register under the following link: www.xing-events.com/1stGTdC.html. \nPlease consider pre-registering as early as possible. \nNote: Timeslots of the Conference are indicative. The actual timeslots are not available yet. \nOriginal photo retrieved from the website. All rights reserved.

SUMMARY:INCENTIVE Final co-creation workshop
DESCRIPTION:INCENTIVE’s Co-creation workshop\nINCENTIVE is getting back from the summer vacations to continue the co-creation process on defining the key aspects of the governance and operating of the Citizen Science Hubs at the four pilot universities: AUTh\, VGTU\, UAB\, and UT. The last and final session of the Co-creation workshop is scheduled on September 22 at 10:00-12:00 CEST and will take place online. \nWhat has happened so far?\nINCENTIVE is now boarding for the last and final session. In the first session\, on June 16th\, we focused on Connect (getting to know each other) & Relate (understanding each other’s perspectives\, discussing frictions and issues). Being the very first session\, we needed to get to know each other and familiarise ourselves with the technology which caused some confusion which was only natural. A Mural board was used to support the first session. In the next sessions\, on June 23rd\, we first re-Connected as there were some new participants at the table) and then we dove into the content in Understand & Frame and Imagine & Ideate. We interpreted the prework outcomes\, adjusted where needed\, and moved to define a framework for the respective CSH at one of the four universities. A second Mural board was used to support these sessions. \n\nGoals and results of the final workshop\nThe goal of the fourth and final session is to focus on the Imagine & Ideate parts of the Responsible Futuring approach. At the end of the session\, we have co-defined the pivotal aspects of the governance and operation of your preferred CSH. This will be done through meaningful exercises in which you define the values of your citizen science hub\, build future scenarios for them\, and finally define the operational nodes of your CSH. \nWho can participate in the workshop?\nThe stakeholders who have already been nominated by the pilot universities will have access to the co-creation activities. However\, anyone who is interested in the process can attend as an observer in the workshop!

SUMMARY:Second consortium meeting
DESCRIPTION:On Friday\, 2nd of July\, 2021\, the INCENTIVE consortium met for the project’s second consortium meeting (in a genuine summer mood). Due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic\, the meeting was held virtually and hosted successfully by the University of Twente (Design Lab)\, the coordinator of the project. The meeting marked the end of the 1st semester of the project – which kicked off on February 2021 – and essentially paved the way for the post-summer activities\, which will resume in September 2021. \nDuring the meeting\, all WP and Task leaders had the opportunity to present in detail the work that they performed during the 1st semester\, the main challenges that they faced\, and the results of their activities. Special emphasis was placed on WP1\, led by AUTH\, which entails a large-scale and multi-dimensional preparatory research work\, whose findings will inform the subsequent development of Citizen Science Hubs in the four pilot Universities. The preliminary findings from the interviews\, large-scale surveys\, quantitative analysis\, and desk research were discussed among partners\, who also proceeded with deliberating on how the findings will inform the creation of open and inclusive Hubs that can accommodate the local societal needs in each ecosystem. \nMoreover\, the activities performed under WP2 and WP3\, which refer to the co-creation and operationalization of the Citizen Science Hubs\, respectively\, were outlined by UT\, SDA Bocconi\, UAB\, and UZH. The main dissemination and networking efforts and results (WR and ECSA)\, as well as the progress on the monitoring and assessment of the project’s activities (Q-PLAN)\, were also thoroughly presented to the consortium partners. The presentations of the Work Packages and the accomplished work gave the chance to all partners to bring up potential challenges\, mitigation measures\, and creative ideas on how to address critical aspects during the next semester. It also allowed partners to identify how each task feeds into other activities\, and thus created a sense of common responsibility for the sound execution of all work packages. \nFurthermore\, during the opening of the meeting\, several members of the project’s Advisory Board who could virtually attend\, were given the floor to introduce themselves and be connected with consortium partners\, as an ice-break activity. AB members were informed about the progress of the project while explaining their educational and professional background as well as the main reasons they decided to join the wider INCENTIVE family. \nStay tuned\, because an exciting second semester is coming! \nMake sure to subscribe to our newsletter and follow us on our SMAs to receive the latest updates from our project’s next steps!

SUMMARY:Co-creation workshop – Session I
DESCRIPTION:The INCENTIVE project aims to support research institutes on how to create and operate their own Citizen Science Hub with the aim to secure a democratic and collaborative way of doing research and setting research agendas. \nTo this end\, we organize a Co-creation workshop with key experts in fields relevant to Citizen Science. The goal of this workshop is to co-define pivotal aspects of the organisation and activities of the Citizen Science Hubs. The core means for the workshop is to engage the key stakeholders of each region and to ensure substantial engagement of everyone involved. \nThe co-creation workshops will be broken down in four online sessions. The first three sessions will take place in June\, whereas the final session will take place in September. It will be fully online through the use of two digital applications: Zoom and Mural. \nWhat happens with the outcomes?\nThe outcomes of the Co-creation workshop are of vital importance to the next phases of INCENTIVE feeding the governance and operating models of each of the hubs as well as the pilots of each of the hubs. \nParticipants and observants \nEach of the four universities has nominated approx. 5 key stakeholders in the regional ecosystem that represent the quadrats of the Quadruple Helix: academia\, government\, private sector and civil society. In addition\, partners from the INCENTIVE project also will join the session as observers to get direct access to the process and outcomes of the session that are relevant for their share of the project. The observers may not influence the co-creation process. \nThe approach\, organisation and moderation of the workshops is done by the DesignLab (University of Twente). The core team includes Janine Swaak who will moderate the Co-creation workshop\, Maya van den Berg who is INCENTIVE programme manager and Jasper Häsler who provides technical support. \nStay tuned for more updates on the Co-creation sessions!
